As Free As the Spirits of Those Who Left

Hey all! This week I found myself getting frustrated with myself as I was drawing because the process wasn’t going as quickly or as easily as I wanted. This is a common occurrence with me– not just with art but with anything that I have to work at. I like to succeed and do well, like anyone, and when I can’t right away it feels like it’s never going to happen. To get myself out of the rut I decided to go through my old sketchbooks. This way I could remind myself of how I got through the frustration before. I know that over the years I have come a Lon way and have improved at certain things but what I didn’t expect was how helpful a little walk down memory lane would be. Revisiting old sketchbooks is a lot like visiting old friends. Some are a welcome and happy surprise while others are like ones you maybe had a falling out with and aren’t too stoked to remember. All of them had their place and served their purpose and taught me one thing or another. What I learned this week is that the advise that I’d always been given is true. The only way out of a rut is through it. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. I’m not where I want to be yet but I’m thankful for the present and I’m learning to be patient with the process.

Music friends: the title of this post refers to some lyrics from the song “Be” by Common. He is one of my favorite poets. I listen to this song when I want to stay in the moment. You can listen to it Here

As always, thank you so very much for following. Next Sunday I make an officially unofficial announcement about my latest project which I have been dying to reveal for months. Don’t forget to follow me Here for updates between Sunday posts! See you all here next week! Until then, here are some oldies from my sketchbooks.
